Why did Gandhi support the Khilafat Movement? After Jallianwala Bagh, Gandhi became completely anti-British. Meanwhile Ottoman Turkey was defeated in WWI and British removed the Caliph's power — the spiritual head of entire Sunni Muslim world. Indian Muslims launched the Khilafat Movement to restore the Caliph. Gandhi saw this as a golden opportunity for Hindu-Muslim unity. Non-Cooperation Movement was launched on 1st August 1920 — the same day Bal Gangadhar Tilak died. Must know for UPSC GS1 Modern India!
