The morning of July thirty-first, nineteen forty-three was already burning by the time Major General Terry Allen raised his binoculars toward Troina. The hilltop town looked quiet from six miles away. It was not quiet. Allen had counted the German positions himself, positions that did not appear on the intelligence maps sitting in Bradley's headquarters. He had written a plan that could bypass every single one of them. Bradley had rejected it six hours ago. Now Allen had to send his men up that hill anyway.
