The Anthropocene - New Age/End Times Matthew Segall and Sean Kelly
The entire Earth community stands poised on the threshold of a planetary initiation. Earth has entered a new epoch, and likely a new era, which has been given the name "Anthropocene"--the Age of the Human. If Earth has entered its human phase, can the human reinvent itself soon enough in harmony with the creative forces of evolution to avoid the unraveling of the very life that birthed it in the first place? In this presentation, Sean Kelly and Matt Segall will explore the deeper implications of this new age and the end times with which it is intimately bound.
Matthew T. Segall, Ph.D., is assistant professor in the Philosophy, Cosmology, and Consciousness program at California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco, CA where he teaches courses primarily on German Idealism and Alfred North Whitehead's process philosophy. He is the author of Physics of the World-Soul: Whitehead's Adventure in Cosmology (2018) and has published journal articles and book chapters on a wide range of topics including panpsychist metaphysics, media theory, the philosophy of biology, the evolution of religion, and psychedelics. He blogs regularly at footnotes2plato.com and tweets way more than he should as @ThouArtThat. His current obsessions include the panpsychist turn in contemporary philosophy of mind and its implications for the scientific study of the origins of life and consciousness.
Sean Kelly, Ph.D., is professor of Philosophy, Cosmology, and Consciousness at the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS). He is the author of Coming Home: The Birth and Transformation of the Planetary Era, co-editor of The Variety of Integral Ecologies: Nature, Culture, and Knowledge in the Planetary Era, and co-translator of Edgar Morin’s Homeland Earth: A Manifesto for the New Millennium. Along with his academic work, Sean teaches taiji and is a facilitator of the group process Work that Reconnects developed by Joanna Macy.
Filmed at the PCC Esalen retreat October 28, 2019.
