US Attorney General William Barr leaving the White House

It has been confirmed US Attorney General William Barr is stepping down from his role just before Christmas.

President Donald Trump tweeted the news confirming Mr Barr will be leaving the White House.

Tensions between the two reached an all-time high after the president threatened to fire the attorney general for failing to investigate President-elect Joe Biden’s son Hunter Biden.

However, the president wrote fondly of his colleague in a tweet.

“Our relationship has been a very good one, he has done an outstanding job,” Mr Trump said.
