Born and raised in a tight-knit community, Detroit natives Tim and Nicole wanted to do their part to make their city thrive and educate others on the power of honey using an offbeat method — they founded the nonprofit Detroit Hives. Like every bee does its part for the greater good of their colony, Detroit Hives aims to bring the inner-city community together to contribute in unique ways that make a positive impact. One way is by flipping vacant lots into collaborative community-driven spaces for bee conservation education. But these certified beekeepers didn’t stop there. They’ve reached far and wide to find new opportunities to change the narrative of how outsiders view Detroit and the Black community. Through unwavering efforts to recognize the city as an official Bee City and create a National Urban Beekeeping Day, they’re creating something powerful that propels their mission forward. This liquid gold is only a byproduct of what they do — their main focus is to provide education on bee conservation while using honey as an avenue to create community development opportunities. This dynamic duo continues to revive their community and inspire kids to find what they love and give it their all to bring their dreams to life.
