Carney, Goyal Push ‘Game-Changer’ India-Canada Trade Deal During High-Stakes Ottawa Talks

India and Canada have accelerated efforts to revive frozen trade ties, with Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal holding high-level talks in Ottawa alongside Prime Minister Mark Carney and Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu. The discussions focused on fast-tracking the long-pending Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement and significantly expanding bilateral commerce.

Both sides announced an ambitious target to triple bilateral trade to fifty billion dollars by 2030 while completing a comprehensive free trade agreement before the end of the year. The renewed momentum follows a prolonged diplomatic freeze that stalled negotiations during 2023 before recent outreach at the G7 Summit helped restart formal engagement.

A major Indian business delegation representing sectors including artificial intelligence, aerospace, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and metals accompanied Goyal during the visit. Discussions also focused heavily on critical minerals, clean energy supply chains, and broader geopolitical alignment between New Delhi and Ottawa.
