SPECTACULAR GILA NATIONAL FOREST-CATWALK RECREATION AREA | A COCKTAIL OF ADVENTURE AND HISTORY EP161

THE SPECTACULAR GILA NATIONAL FOREST CATWALK RECREATION AREA IS AN INTOXICATING COCKTAIL OF ADVENTURE AND HISTORY! This catwalk was originally used during the construction and maintenance of a 4" diameter (and later 18" diameter) water supply pipe. The water was needed to supply the needs of a gold & silver mining ore crusher locating up on the hillside near the parking lot you arrived at.

Gold and silver were discovered in the Mogollon Mountains over Whitewater Canyon. The small town of Graham (also known as Whitewater) grew up to support the new ore crusher mill in 1893. You can still see remnants of the original ore crusher on the west hillside bank above the parking area. The mill was in operation for only 10 years. In the mid-1930's the Civilian Conservation Corps rebuilt the weather worn Catwalks for us all to enjoy. After the 2012 Whitewater-Baldy Fire, the Catwalk bridge system was damaged again when it washed away during a huge flood. The bridge system was rebuilt, this time to more modern standards and is now open for us all to experience. The steel Catwalks are about .5 mile long. The gravel, concrete and steel walkway area is ADA Accessible for all of the "most interesting and beautiful area" that there is to see. The trail system continues for another .5 - .75 miles after the steel catwalks. Pit (vault) toilets and a picnic area are available.
