C-section (Cesarean Delivery) | How C-Section is Performed?

C-section (Cesarean Delivery), Do You Know How C-Section Performed?
lets See,
A Cesarean section, also known as a C-section, is a surgical procedure for delivering a baby in which an incision is made in the mother's abdomen and uterus to remove the baby.

Usually, in most cases, babies are delivered through vaginal birth, but if normal delivery is not possible for some reason, then a C-section is performed.

Let's first look at the conditions where a C-section is opted for:

Labor Dystocia:
Labor dystocia occurs when the mother's labor progression is not proceeding properly, and the cervix doesn't dilate properly. In such cases, the mother is usually given oxytocin hormone treatment. If the cervix still doesn't dilate, a C-section is performed to deliver the baby.

Breech Baby:
In this condition, the baby's position is not suitable for normal delivery. Normally, the baby's head should be positioned towards the cervix, but if the baby's position is different, such as when the baby's head is not down but the feet or back are towards the cervix, a C-section is performed.

Twins or Multiple Babies:
If a pregnant mother is carrying twins or more babies, a C-section is often performed.

Placenta Previa:
Sometimes, the placenta covers the opening of the cervix, which is called placenta previa. The placenta is an organ that facilitates the exchange of materials between the mother and baby during pregnancy. If the placenta is too close to the cervix, it obstructs normal delivery, and a C-section is necessary.

Prolapsed Umbilical Cord:
If the umbilical cord comes out of the cervix before the baby, a normal delivery is not possible, as the cord can get compressed during delivery, potentially causing stress to the baby.

Fetal Macrosomia:
When a baby's weight is significantly higher than normal, it can make vaginal delivery difficult, leading to the need for a C-section.

In addition to these reasons, there can be other factors for performing a C-section, such as the presence of a uterine tumor, maternal herpes infection, slow fetal heartbeat, umbilical cord around the baby's neck, or a history of previous C-section.

Now, let's see how a C-section procedure is performed:

The mother is asked to stop eating and drinking.
Blood samples are taken for testing and potential blood transfusion.
The mother is taken to the operating room, where she receives regional anesthesia, usually in the spine, to numb the lower half of her body and minimize pain during surgery.
Antibiotics and fluids are given through an IV line, and a catheter is inserted for urine collection.
The doctor makes a vertical or horizontal incision on the abdomen and cuts through layers to reach the uterus.
The uterus is opened, and the baby is gently lifted out.
The umbilical cord is clamped and cut.
The placenta is removed from the uterus, and the uterus and abdominal layers are stitched back together.
After the surgery, the mother stays in the hospital for 2 to 3 days. It takes about 3 to 6 weeks for the incision to heal, and gentle walking is recommended for faster recovery.

Thank you.
