How to Connect to Windows Server 2016 via Remote Desktop 🖥️ (RDP)

🖥️ On the Windows Server (Host)
Ensure Remote Desktop is Enabled:
Log in to the server locally or through another remote tool.

Open Server Manager (usually starts automatically).

Click Local Server in the left panel.

Find Remote Desktop and click Disabled (if it's off).

In the System Properties window:

Select Allow remote connections to this computer.

Uncheck Allow connections only from computers running Remote Desktop with Network Level Authentication (if you're unsure whether your client supports it).

Click Apply and OK.

Allow RDP Through Firewall:
Go to Control Panel, then System and Security, then Windows Firewall, then Allow an app or feature.

Make sure Remote Desktop is checked.

🌐 Network & User Access
Find the Server’s IP Address:
Open Command Prompt.

Type: ipconfig

Note the IPv4 Address.

Ensure the User Has Permission:
Open System Properties, then go to the Remote tab.

Click Select Users under the Remote Desktop section.

Add the user account if it's not already listed (admins are allowed by default).

💻 On Your Local Computer (Client)
Press Windows + R, type mstsc, and press Enter.

In the Computer field, enter the server's IP address or hostname.

Click Connect.

Enter your username and password when prompted.

Accept any certificate warnings, if shown.

✅ Optional Notes
RDP Port: Make sure port 3389 is open on the firewall or router if you're connecting over the internet.

If using a public IP, configure NAT or port forwarding on your router to direct traffic to the server's internal IP address.
