Death of a Beetlecat

A sad few hours, but when the keel's rotten and there's no place to step a mast, why would you pay to have your Catboat hauled away to ignoble anonymity when you can pay $25 to rent a "Sawzall" for a day? "Django" was about 40 years old, and we think this is an ironically elegant end to his voyages, frisking about the Cape, then finally Duxbury Bay and his annual laid back laps around Clark's Island (one of the first landforms the Pilgrims, those scoundrels, saw before they hit the beach and ruined the continent). We did save the transom/stern and plan to mount it on the wall; it will make a decent bar. So, when the first martini or pint is lifted from what's left of the cedar decking across Django's ass-end, we will not be toasting Myles Standish; rather, we will raise a glass to the folks at Beetlecat in Wareham who've kept this boat afloat and functioning on borrowed time. (*to folks whose passionate comments below, though noble in intention, decry this dismemberment: the previous owner had encased the entire hull with fiberglass, there was nothing left of the boat. Even the keel had turned to pudding and splinters. The folks at Beetlecat themselves advised scuttling, not donation.)
