Sounds From The Corner : #23 Dried Cassava

Before Sensitive Explosive in 2014, long time ago I saw Dried Cassava shyly ingesting Hendrix, Peppers and Zep on-stage but their first song from this session - titled “Morpheus” - is a concrete proof that the quartet have traveled far from Mind Thieves in 2011. The multi-faceted opener is brave, celebrating hooks and layered parts as a way to communicate recency and decency from the four-piece unit. Perfect song as an entrance to the musical journey of Dried Cassava for the next 27 minutes.

Dried Cassava might exhibit themselves as a Rock group, but Baskoro’s vocal carries a undeniably Pop nuance with an extensive range and steady quality. Since this is also the reason why the band sounds like the good guys jamming Rock (aside of the drummer’s adorable smile), it could be a tricky and problematic but in the same time also potentially grant higher ground of quality when executed properly.

Third song “Zurr En Arrh” (honest question - what does it mean) is the perfect example of this premise, as the song beautifully unfolded into bigger maze and syncopations, Baskoro’s vocal acts as icing in the middle of the song and vanished, as the parts progress to a more dense taste of hard rock.

Lesson learned from their first album, where Dried Cassava successfully blurred their identity using first single “Paradox” (second song from this session), which was straight-up Pop when most of their songs were hard-rock/funk. Last thing a band wants is to be recognized via one hit wonder, worse when the song doesn’t even represent the musical DNA of the group (Homework: Google Hoobastank + The reason).

But things went good for these lads as they move forward to a more sturdy stance within smaller corridor, yet showcasing experimental depth. The latent danger of this kind of genre is the songs could sound too “jammy” and lacking structure but I have to say that Dried Cassava’s quality canvas is now proven through this session. And I guess fifth song "Hellblazer" is the answer to the question: who is Dried Cassava?

As usual, we are happy to be able to freeze and frame Dried Cassava for you to consume and spread. Sounds From the Corner is a true labor of love, a result of collective love towards Indonesian music and this time - as always - we are proud to present: Dried Cassava. Enjoy! - Teguh Wicaksono
