Vatukoula, Fiji. An old colonial town.

The Vatukoula gold mine is located at the northern tip of the main island of Viti Levu, in the Nakauvadra Mountains, and a few kilometers inland from the coast. It has been historically the most productive of Fiji's precious metal mines and has the fame of being the world's farthest from any continental landmass. Gold was discovered there in 1868, and mining commenced in the 1930s when it resembled a Wild West frontier town attracting people from all over Fiji. It developed into a proper colonial town. It was known as the Emperor Gold Mine during its heyday before the price of gold fell. Now it is a Chinese-operated company and shadow of its former self.
