Former White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney says if Joe Biden “stumbles or performs very badly” at the first presidential debate in June the Democrats “can still replace him” at the convention.
Joe Biden and Donald Trump have agreed to two presidential debates.
They will be held on June 27 and September 10.
“The theory goes that let’s go ahead and have a debate … if Biden stumbles or performs very badly, [the Democrats] can still replace him at the convention,” Mr Mulvaney told Sky News host James Morrow.
“Keep in mind, neither of these men will be the formal nominees of their party at the time of this first debate.”
