Sea kayaking - Loch Shiel, Moidart and Ailort
Some very mixed and challenging conditions but we went ahead with our plan. Starting at Glenfinnan on Loch Shiel we headed down the loch 12 miles into wind and hat removing gusts, to reach the sheltered midge heaven at the South side. We sat and had our dinner topped of with a coating of midge surprise. The next morning we headed west continuing our trip stopping at Eilean Fhianain (St Finan's island) and visited the chapel, ancient burial place for the chiefs of Moidart and a site of pilgrimage for the penitent. We then continued westward wind in our face to the River Shiel where we got a break from the wind while heading toward Loch Moidart. After the 1km portage around the falls and low tide we stopped at Castle Tioram for a bite to eat and explore. I had been reliably informed the preferred North Channel on Loch Moidart could be paddled 3 hours after low tide. This turned out to be pretty accurate even though we got their about 20 mins early. As we paddled the North channel the wind had reduced significantly for us heading North to the Atlantic Ocean and into the Sound of Arisaig. Even with little wind the swell and clapotis from the cliffs made is a challenging few miles. We headed up the channel and found a very secluded beach for the night sheltered from the wind. The sand was a small price to pay for some shelter from the returning wind and a comfortable nights sleep. After a bit of rain during the night we awoke, some later than others to dry conditions. The wind however had picked up and was funneling down Loch Ailort at incredible speed. We set off from our sheltered beach to a tail wind covering most of Loch Ailort in under an hour. Back at the car the rain started just as we got packed for home. Steak pie and a burger filled a gap on the way home.
