One of the things I see most of my patients do is to take extremely hot water, to the extent of
drinking boiling hot water, drinking lots of kadha and other local substances. Whether they catch
the coronavirus or not, they definitely are getting sore throats because of doing so.
The first and foremost is our diet. We need to include nutritionally dense food in our diets. These
include vegetables, fruits, low-fat milk, beans, nuts, milk products, fish and lean meat. These foods
have vitamins, minerals, nutrients and are low in fat, carbohydrates and have good protein. These
foods keep you healthy, keep your immunity at good levels and help keep your weight low.
What I don’t want you to do is have sugar. So, the first thing you have to do as far as your diet is
concerned is to get rid of sugar completely.
Refined sugar and other things which have sugar including cakes and pastries must not be
consumed. The single culprit that I would like to bring up is biscuits, also called cookies.
The mantra you must keep in mind is ‘no nutrition without calories.’ So, food which has calories but
no nutrition should not be consumed. Food which is nutritionally rich and low in calories is the best
food for you.
The second thing to keep your immunity high is to exercise regularly, moderate physical activity
depending on your age and fitness levels. Exercise not only keeps you supple it keeps you healthy,
keeps your weight and BMI low and gives you a positive body image which is important, because
you need to feel good about your body.
The third and last thing about boosting immunity is sleep or rest. Your body needs adequate rest.
Fortunately, because most of us are working from home, we are not travelling too much and our
travel time is restricted so we have more time to ourselves. We should use that time to rest
adequately. 8 hours of sleep is good for you because that is when the body and mind are at rest, and
can rejuvenate and heal, so that you are fit to face another day.
So, as far boosting immunity or fitness is concerned, just remember these three things – eat well,
exercise regularly and sleep well.
