Why This Tiny German 'Robot Tank' Terrified Allied Soldiers On D-Day
In 1942, German engineers built something that seemed impossible: a remote-controlled bomb on tracks. The Goliath was designed to crawl across battlefields and detonate beneath tanks, bunkers, and groups of enemy soldiers. On D-Day, hundreds waited in camouflaged bunkers along the Normandy beaches. But when the invasion came, almost none of them worked.
This is the story of World War Two's first military robot—a weapon that terrified the soldiers who saw it, failed almost every time it was used, and accidentally became the ancestor of every military drone operating today.
