9th Gen Impala Audio Upgrades Part 1: ATOTO F7 Pro 10 Inch Headunit

This is the start of a series of audio upgrades that I will be performing to my 2012 9th Gen Impala. First up, I install the $220 ATOTO F7 Pro Edition headunit with a MASSIVE 10" floating display. To install this unit into the 9th Gen Impala and get it to function properly there are some additional accessories that need to be purchased.

Here is the link to the ATOTO F7 Pro:

First up is an install kit to properly fit it into the Impala's dash. There are several different brands you can choose from. The one I went with was the "Best Kit BKGMK318 Double DIN Installation Dash Kit for 2006-2013 Chevrolet Vehicles" https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00YCDAGGO?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details

Next up is the PAC RP5-GM31 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B009P8A044?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details
This will allow you to retain OnStar, warning chimes, steering wheel controls (kinda,) and allows you to properly power the headunit.

I also purchased the matching backup camera. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08RD53RLP?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details
I did so because my old camera was not capable of being activated by the ATOTO headunit (it was possible to trigger it manually when in reverse, but it would not trigger on its own by shifting into reverse.) The ATOTO camera is able to be triggered at any time, and you can use it while you're in motion. When you trigger it going down the highway, the gridlines do not show up.

I also purchased a SiriusXM tuner, which is (theoretically) compatible with this headunit. I had some trouble getting the SXM tuner to work with the headunit, so I have done away with it for the time being. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NJTO4CY/?coliid=IZM2DEKJJDMGH&colid=2JESJWVNR7EBG&psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it

You'll also see that I added in a different external microphone than the one provided. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XXKDYHX/?coliid=I25HXQX0Z2VDIF&colid=2JESJWVNR7EBG&psc=0&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it

I went back and forth with ATOTO customer service in regards to the SXM tuner and getting the steering wheel controls to work using the PAC RP5-GM31. I eschewed what they told me and both plugged in the 3.5mm SWC jack and connected the blue wire from the RP5-GM31 to the Key1 wire. This is the only way to get the SWC's to get a response from the A7. I was only able to program 3 separate functions, so I programmed Volume Up, Volume Down, and Camera Trigger. I programmed the "Source" and "Next Track" keys to handle the volume, and the 5 remaining keys all trigger the camera.

So as you can see, this radio has some trade-offs. Considering this unit was merely $220, I don't have much to complain about. The Android Auto works just as well as it does on my wife's 2016 Cruze (every so often it crashes and reboots the stereo, but I place the blame squarely on AA and not the headunit.) I absolutely LOVE Android Auto and HAD to have it in my car, so that was my main impetus for purchasing this headunit. The MyLink radio was serving my needs just fine, it was just a shame that it would've cost $550 to purchase a module to add Android Auto (and at that, it would only be on a 6.2" screen.)
