Why Do Geologists Lick Rocks?

Geologists use a simple trick called "taste testing" to identify minerals in the field. If a geologist licks a rock and it's salty, they know it contains halite. But, and it's a big but, this method only works for a handful of minerals because most minerals are tasteless or even toxic.
