Dhananjay Bhattacharya & Pannalal Bhattacharjee Collection | Bengali Songs

Pannalal Bhattacharjee and Dhananjay Bhattacharya were two brothers whose contribution in the field of Modern Bengali Songs especially in the genre of Shyama Sangeet is unparalleled. Most of the songs he sang were written by Ramprasad Sen and Kamalakanta Bhattacharya, both of whom were Shakta poets of Bengal. He developed a special style of singing, Shyama Sangeet, that continues to be used. Pannalal started singing in 1947 with Sanat Sinha, another renowned musician, only at the age of 17. At first he sang modern Bengali songs, until a friend of Sanat Sinha named Bishwanath Kumar recruited Pannalal to sing his first hit Shyama Sangeet, "Aamar sadh na mitilo aasha na purilo, sokoli phuraye jay ma..." (None of my desires were fulfilled, nor my hopes have come true, O mother...). This rendition is now acclaimed as a classic in Bengal. "Aamar Sadhna mitilo" wasn't Pannalal's first shyamasangeet record.

Earlier he had recorded extremely popular shyamasanget like "Aamar Mayer Paye Jaba Hoye", "Tui naki Ma Dayamayee", Tui je Kemon Dayamayee", "Sakali Tomari Ichha" etc. His distinct singing voice and his devotional spirit have melted the hearts of countless devotees of Mother Kali across Bengal. He became a great devotee of Kali and always remained engrossed in her thoughts. Pannalal and his elder brother Dhananjay Bhattacharya, another eminent singer of Shyama Sangeet, wanted to please Kali by offering her their songs. Eight of his great tracks are compiled here in this compilation album. Aay Ma Sadhan Samarey is one such great hit. The other tracks are sung by the legendary Dhananjay Bhattacharya. All them are written by poet Sadhak Ramprasad and are part of this great film Matribhakta Ramprasad. It is also known as Shaktagiti or Durgastuti. Out of the total 24 songs in the movie Sadhak Ramprasad(1956), Dhananjay Bhattacharya sang 23 songs. He was versatile in singing major types and forms of songs including Modern Bengali, Hindustani Classical Music, Rabindra Sangeet, Kirtan, Bhajan, Baul, Ramprasadi(of Ramprasad Sen), Nazrul Geeti, Shyama Sangeet etc. This compilation includes some of the great hits of Dhananjay Bhattacharya like Aamaay De Maa Tabildaari and Ebaar Kali Tomaay Khaabo. This Shyama Sangeet compilation is a classic and full of evergreen tracks.
