UULA Adult RE: Ancient Egypt Part 5: Egyptian Religion, Amarna Period

This month we will be discussing the Amarna Period of Egyptian history. During this period, the Pharaoh moved the capital, changed the religious beliefs, and launched a major shift in artistic styles. The religious changes involved the first recorded experimentation with monotheism, something that would later become a major world changing religious innovation. However, this particular experiment did not survive the Pharaoh who initiated it. After his death, his child successor was swayed by the traditional priests, changed his name, and restored the ancient traditional religious practices. That pharaoh's name was Tutankhamen, and you all likely know his name.

Tutankhamen died young, and there is some reasonable evidence that Tutankhamen was murdered. It seems reasonable that this murder was related to the religious upheavals that surrounded him. If he was murdered, it may have been either by a monotheist who was angry that he did not follow in his father's footsteps, or else by a polytheist that was afraid that he would attempt to return to the innovations of his father.
