Food Sustainability In The Caribbean
The University of the West Indies and the CARICOM Private Sector Organisation have signed a Memorandum of Agreement as part of a collaborative effort to increase food security and reduce the importation cost of food in the Caribbean.
The signing of this Agreement commemorates the formation of an alliance between universities responsible for agriculture and research in the region. Their aim will be to increase cooperation between public and private sector organisations to advance the economic goals of sustainability within the region.
In August of 2022, Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley called on officials of the University of the West Indies, University of Trinidad and Tobago, and the University of Guyana to champion the 25 by 25 food security initiative.
With the signing of this Agreement, the CARICOM region hopes to benefit from a reduction of food imports of 25% by 2025.
