Peptic ulcer disease (PUD) is a medical condition in which ulcers are formed in the inner stomach lining, first part of small intestine (duodenum) and rarely the lower esophagus as well. Stomach lining is protected by mucus layer, but various factors lead to the reduction in this protective layer which leads to ulceration. These ulcers include stress and refractory ulcers.

PEPTIC ULCER ETIOLOGY
This section started off by a mention of epidemiology of peptic ulcer disease. Amongst the various causes, Hp infection, aspirin and NSAIDs alongside idiopathic ulcers are a few. Two types of ulcers are discussed here which includes the refractory and stress ulcers.

PEPTIC ULCER MANAGEMENT
Peptic ulcer presents with a range of clinical and alarm features. The latter includes left supraclavicular lymphadenopathy, palpable abdominal mass and dysphagia. Diagnosis can be done via EGD, endoscopy (expensive) and gastric mucosal biopies. Moreover, medical therapy (using antacids) along with the anti-secretory agents (H2RAs and PPIs) are used. Additionally, mucosal protective agents are also taken.

PUD COMPLICATIONS
Prevention of the condition involves the use of antacids, H2RAs and misoprostol. Furthermore, PPIs and COX-2 inhibitors can be taken. Bleeding can be treated via endoscopictherapy, injection methods and angiographic therapy. However, perforation can be treated through medical therapy and laparoscopic repair. Whereas, obstruction is treated using endoscopic balloon dilation and truncal vagotomy or antrectomy.
