Seeds of Perseverance: Hawai'i Rooted

Lyndsey Haraguchi-Nakayama and her family have been hand-harvesting taro on their Kaua'i farm for over a hundred years.

As a fifth-generation taro farmer, Lyndsey sees her kuleana (responsibility) as providing food for the community – even if there are challenges outside of her control. When she is not harvesting taro, Lyndsey also runs Hanalei Taro & Juice Co., a lunch wagon that serves up taro burgers, taro hummus, and a coconut-taro dessert known as kulolo using the ingredients she harvests herself. She also helps educate the local community and visitors with ecotours on the farm and its on-site museum. Their family work ethic has prevailed across generations, and Lyndsey hopes to continue the hard work for generations to come.

Lyndsey’s family farm, Ho‘opulapula Haraguchi Rice Mill & Taro Farm, is also a U.S. Fish & Wildlife refuge that protects native Hawaiian wildlife & plants. To see it in person, you can visit the farm via guided tours.
