Can grapes grow on trees?
Do grapes grow on trees? Well technically no - they grow on a vine. But Jaboticaba (Myrciaria cauliflora) or Brazilian Grape Tree is a beautiful slow-growing tree that produces amazing sweet fruit right on the trunk that are similar. These dark purple grape-like fruits are delicious - you pop the whole thing in your mouth and let the flavour explode - then you spit out the skin and seed ;-). So fun to eat, and amazing flavour. You can also make jellies, jams, juice or wine.
This tree has been nurtured since pre-Columbian times. The name comes from the indigenous Tupi people of Brazil named it: jabuti meaning tortoise and caba meaning place. It grew where there were lots of tortoises and as the fruits matured and fell to the ground, the tortoises came for a shady feast.
Left to grow it will reach 15 metres, but it can also be shaped as a hedge or even grown in a pot. To be able to harvest the fruits, best to keep it a manageable height. It has multiple crops each year too - bonus! It does well in subtropical climates.
