Sophia University in 30 Seconds - History #shorts

The roots of Sophia University trace back to 1549, when St. Francis Xavier, a Catholic Jesuit missionary, arrived in Japan. He dreamed of establishing a university in the "capital city" of Japan. However, this vision was put on hold due to the ban on Christianity that followed.

Nearly 350 years later, in 1908, three Jesuit priests from Germany, France, and the UK came to Japan under the direction of Pope Pius X. In 1913, they founded Sophia University. These priests, well-versed in Eastern culture and philosophy, dedicated themselves to learning Japanese and deepening their understanding of Japanese culture to realize their mission.

From its inception, Sophia University was envisioned as a place that transcends borders—between nations, disciplines, and languages. This spirit of openness and internationalism has been at the heart of Sophia University since its founding.
