EV Help: AC charging cables & connectors for electric vehicles and how to buy the correct cable

This is intended as a beginners guide to explain the different types of AC charging cables for electric vehicles (in the UK). If you need to buy a new cable for your EV, this will show you which type of cable you need to buy.
In the UK we have 230V AC. So if your car has up to 3.6kW charging, then a 16A cable will do. If your car can charge up to 7.5kW, then you need a 32A cable. If your car can charge at 11kW or 22kW, then you want a 3-phase cable.
