A walk from Bridgewater Canal to the Manchester Ship Canal through Stockton Heath, Warrington.

We start on the bank of the Bridgewater Canal opposite the London Bridge pub. We walk under London Bridge and past Thorn Marine onto Mitchell Street before joining London Road (A49). We head north along London Road passing the well-kept Victorian houses and stop for a short look at Hillcrest, the home of George Formby. We continue along London Road passing Stockton Fryer and Nando’s which occupies the old Fire Station. We are now close to the centre and pass a number of upmarket bars and restaurants in the old Victoria Hotel building on Victoria Square. We cross Grappenhall Road (A56) which runs through Victoria Square opposite the police station and pass between the Mulberry Tree Inn and Red Lion on London Road as we pass into the main shopping area. We continue along London Road passing the variety of shops, bars and restaurants before passing St Thomas’s Church. We cross Ellesmere Road (B5156) and join Wilderspool Causeway as we walk over the Swing Bridge over the Manchester Ship Canal. We catch a glimpse of the old Greenhalls Brewery as we walk past the Morrisons petrol station to get a look at the swing bridge.

Stockton Heath is a suburb in the south of Warrington, Cheshire, England. It is located to the north of the Bridgewater Canal and to the south of the Manchester Ship Canal.
Stockton Heath is home to a number of modern bars and restaurants, as well as traditional public houses. The Red Lion Inn dates back to the early 19th century and the Mulberry Tree on Victoria Square, opened in its present building (replacing earlier premises dating from 1725) in March 1907.
Since 1988, much of the centre of Stockton Heath has been designated a conservation area to preserve its character but, at the same time, there has been redevelopment work with several new bars and restaurants moving into the centre of Stockton Heath.
