In fact, the average energy rating for older homes is less than three stars out of ten, which means they lose heat in winter and trap heat in summer.

That often leads to higher electricity bills because people rely heavily on heaters and air conditioning just to stay comfortable.

Simple upgrades like LED lighting, sealing gaps around windows and floors, and adding ceiling insulation can significantly improve energy efficiency.

Experts say even improving a home from three stars to five stars could cut heating and cooling energy use by around 40%.
