Australia's Most Decorated Soldier Ben Roberts-Smith Denies Afghan War Crimes After Bail

Ben Roberts-Smith, 47, Australia's most decorated soldier, has publicly broken his silence after being charged with five counts of war crimes linked to his deployments in Afghanistan between 2009 and 2012. Speaking on Queensland's Gold Coast shortly after being released on bail following more than a week in custody, Roberts-Smith categorically denied all allegations and declared he was proud of his service.
The former Special Air Service corporal is accused of murdering five unarmed Afghan civilians. Each charge carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment. Prosecutors had opposed bail, expressing concern he could attempt to contact witnesses, but a judge granted it after noting the case could take years to reach trial.
Roberts-Smith first faced public scrutiny in 2018 when Nine Entertainment newspapers published a series of investigative reports. In 2023, he lost a civil defamation case against the publishers and was found on the balance of probabilities to have been involved in the killing of four Afghan civilians. He continues to deny any wrongdoing and says he intends to use the criminal trial to finally clear his name.
