Train Cab Ride NL / HSL - Behind Delayed Thalys / Rotterdam - Amsterdam / TRAXX IC 1047 / Aug 2021

Hi everyone! Two weeks have flown by again! Time for a new Train Cab Ride through the Dutch country side. Get on board the Intercity Direct from Rotterdam to Schiphol Airport and Amsterdam Central Station.

We depart perfectly on time from Rotterdam Central Station. But on the right side you can see a Thalys train departing as well. Both of us are bound for the HSL to Amsterdam. Because the maximum speed of the Thalys on the HSL is 300km/h we need to wait until he has entered the HSL first. That’s why we take it slow from Rotterdam to the HSL.

On the tablet I get a lot of information about what’s going on at the tracks ahead. In this case I can see how far the Thalys train is traveling in front of us and I can adjust my speed until the signal gives me the green light. Passing it while it’s yellow is also an option, but entering the HSL would then be done on lower speed causing an even bigger delay. That’s why we wait until the light is green so we can enter the HSL on normal speed.

The coming toward us is waiting for us to pass by. Our small delay will case an even smaller delay for that train. Eventually it arrived with a 1.46 minute delay at Rotterdam while we travel on the HSL with a 3.5 minute delay.

In the video you can of course see the steps taken to pass the voltage change-over. Pantographs must be lowered because the wires in the voltage change-over are grounded. And we don’t wanna create a big boom!

Just after we have passed Bergschenhoek we pass Bleiswijk area. There’s a phase-lock located. This section separates two phases on the high voltage wire system. This way we make sure there won’t be too many trains in asking power of one phase. Both voltage change-over’s and the phase-lock are 400 meters long. At the phase-lock the wires are not grounded like in the voltage change-over. So we won’t need to lower the pantographs here. Only all high voltage systems on board the train are disengaged.

Time to leave the HSL again and pass a voltage change-over to change back from 25kV AC to 1500V DC.

Entering the tunnel of Schiphol Airport. This time some extra info given in the video. You can find more information about the tunnel on Wikipedia if you like! :D

We arrive with just over 2 minutes delay. After we have departed from Schiphol Airport we are still behind the Thalys train and another sprinter and intercity that got delayed because of the Thalys. We have about 60 trains an hour running at Schiphol Airport. If one of them gets delayed it’s like domino’s. But we’ll always make it work as you can see.

Getting lower speeds on the light signals because of the delayed sprinter in front of us. Also making an announcement this time for the passengers. Expected delay at Amsterdam Central Station will be about 2-3 minutes.
