Apple is Locking iPhone Batteries to Discourage Independent Repair

At the launch of iOS 12 in September of 2018, repair techs started to notice a disturbing trend: any time they replaced a battery in an iPhone newer than the iPhone X, the battery health diagnostics tool in the Settings app would report that the installed battery was unable to be verified as an authentic Apple battery. As a result, battery health information feature would be disabled. This happened even if the installed battery was a verified authentic Apple part, even one from another brand-new iPhone.

What does this mean? Well, thankfully replacement batteries still work (for now, at least), but it's one more thorn in the side of Apple fixers. Not only does it subtly undermine the reputation of repair shops in the eyes of customers, but it also takes away the truly-useful battery health feature.

So if you thought Apple had stopped attacking independent repair, we've got some bad news for you. They now appear to be locking down even the most basic repairs: unnecessarily pairing commonly-repaired parts to the logic board, and preventing their full functionality from being restored after a non-authorized repair.

2019 update: The new iPhone 11 phones all exhibit a similar behavior, but this time with their displays, in addition to their batteries.
