The Andhra Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, is reportedly planning to acquire an additional 30,000–44,676 acres of land for the expansion of Amaravati, the state’s capital, primarily through the Land Pooling Scheme (LPS). This is in addition to the 34,241 acres already pooled from 29,881 farmers across 29 villages in Guntur district between 2014 and 2019. The expansion aims to develop a "mega city" with infrastructure projects, including an international airport requiring approximately 4,000–5,000 acres, alongside roads, drainage systems, and institutional developments. The Andhra Pradesh Capital Region Development Authority (APCRDA) is identifying land in villages across Guntur and Krishna districts, with 11 villages like Harischandrapuram, Vaddamanu, and Tadikonda under consideration for pooling around 30,000 acres from a total of 44,673 acres. No final decision has been made on whether the government will opt for voluntary land pooling or direct acquisition, but Minister P. Narayana emphasized a preference for LPS to ensure farmers receive developed plots and long-term benefits, unlike traditional acquisition, which offers only 2.5 times the land’s registration value. The project, estimated to cost ₹64,000 crores, is funded by loans from the World Bank (₹15,000 crores), HUDCO (₹11,000 crores), and other banks, with 30% of the 53,500-acre capital region designated for green and blue spaces. The plan has sparked controversy. The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) criticized the proposed acquisition of 44,000 acres, arguing that the existing 54,000 acres should be developed efficiently to benefit surrounding farmers. BSP coordinator J. Purnachandra Rao questioned the need for such a large additional land bank, noting that the nearby Vijayawada and upcoming Bhogapuram airports reduce the necessity for a new airport requiring 5,000–7,000 acres. Opposition parties, including the YSR Congress Party, and activists like E.A.S. Sarma allege the project is turning Amaravati into a "real estate venture," with concerns about corruption and favoritism toward large industries. Posts on X echo public skepticism, with some users calling the acquisition “disastrous” and questioning the ease of acquiring fertile farmland, though these claims lack official confirmation.Recent developments include the approval of 59 tenders worth ₹37,702 crores for Amaravati’s construction, with timelines set for completing officials’ residences within one year, trunk roads in 1.5 years, and iconic buildings in three years. The government is also exploring partnerships with Singapore-based agencies and has allocated 200 acres for a Mega Global Medicity to boost medical tourism. Critics highlight environmental risks, as Amaravati is in a flood-prone and seismic zone, and socio-economic concerns for small farmers, with allegations that the LPS benefits larger landowners. While sources like The Hindu, Telugu360, and TV9 Telugu report the 44,000–44,676-acre figure, others cite 30,000–40,000 acres, indicating uncertainty in the exact scale.
