Hello, everyone. My name is Eve. And a walk in the park led me to two years in a cult.

To be completely honest with you, I’ve never felt really loved. My parents were both over-achievers with great careers. But somehow, I was terrible at school. They kept telling me that I was lazy and that I wasn’t trying hard enough. Every day, I’d walk back home from school taking the longest path possible so I’d at least have some minutes for myself. And this led me to the craziest experience of my life.

One of those days, I walked by the park and saw three guys sitting there and meditating by the pond. I was staring at them the whole time, feeling jealous because they seemed so peaceful. That’s when one of them opened his eyes and looked at me. He walked towards me. Maybe I was starved of intimacy, but as soon as he touched the tips of my fingers, I started bawling. He said, “there’s nothing to worry about,” took my hand, and walked me to the others. “I’m Jeremy,” the guy introduced himself. “It looks like you were searching for us.” I sat down and we started talking about our lives and our struggles. It was therapeutic, ‘cause I’d never talked with anyone before about my parents. After that, they talked about their Teacher, Adam. How much good in the world Adam’s teachings could do. If he had enough resources and enough people to help him. I understood that most of the people in the community were teenagers that had nowhere else to go. And he turned them into spirited human beings that wanted to change the world, to protest violence and wars. “He will be incredibly pleased to meet you, Eve,” they said. I mean, that was the weirdest coincidence of all, right? I don’t know what came over me, but it felt right. When I was walking back home from the meeting, I already had a plan in my mind...
