Gray whale deaths are rising along Washington’s coast, with researchers linking the pattern to Arctic ecosystem shifts that disrupt their food supply. This year, 21 dead gray whales have been found along Washington shores, among the highest totals on record. Cascadia Research Collective founder John Calambokitis said the current stranding pace surpasses the 2019 record of 35. Researchers estimate the gray whale population may be roughly half of what it was a decade ago, due in part to low calf births and elevated mortality. Many whales found dead appear severely malnourished, suggesting scarcity of prey during their long migration from Mexico to the Arctic. The root problem likely lies in the Arctic, where climate-driven ecosystem changes have reduced prey abundance. As food becomes harder to find, some whales wander into bays and busy waterways, increasing risks from vessel strikes and entanglement. Public is urged to report strandings and keep distance.
