WALKING WITH PROSTHETIC LEG l #upsc #pib #news #vvkias #shorts
A low-cost, advanced carbon fiber foot prosthesis, named ADIDOC, has been jointly developed by DRDO's Defence Research & Development Laboratory (DRDL) and AIIMS Bibinagar. This "Make-in-India" innovation is designed to be cost-effective and is expected to significantly reduce the price of carbon fiber prosthetic feet in India. The prosthesis, which can withstand loads up to 125 kgs with a safety factor, comes in three variants to suit different patient weights.
Here's a more detailed look:
Development:
The AIIMS Bibinagar – DRDL, DRDO Indigenously Developed Optimised Carbon Foot Prosthesis (ADIDOC) was unveiled on July 14, 2025.
Key Features:
Cost-effectiveness: The ADIDOC is designed to be significantly cheaper than imported carbon fiber prosthetic feet, potentially costing as low as Rs 20,000 compared to around Rs 2 lakh for similar imported products.
High Load Capacity: It's biomechanically tested to support loads up to 125 kg with a good safety factor.
Multiple Variants: It's available in three variants to accommodate patients of different weights.
Significance:
Aatmanirbhar Bharat: This initiative is a step towards self-reliance in medical devices and aligns with the "Aatmanirbhar Bharat" (self-reliant India) initiative.
Accessibility: By reducing the cost, the ADIDOC aims to make high-quality prosthetic limbs more accessible to a wider range of amputees in India, particularly those with lower incomes.
Reduced Dependency: The development of this indigenous prosthesis reduces India's reliance on imported prosthetic technologies.
Social and Economic Inclusion: The project is expected to support broader social and economic inclusion for people with disabilities.
Collaboration:
The development of ADIDOC was a collaborative effort between DRDO's Defence Research & Development Laboratory (DRDL) and AIIMS Bibinagar.
Availability:
The prosthesis is expected to be available in the market soon, with the potential to transform prosthetic care in India.
