Humanoid Robot vs. Texas Heat: 105°F, 18 Minutes, Everything Measured

We ran a Booster K1 humanoid robot outdoors in 105°F Texas heat and logged every joint, the onboard computer, and the motion sensors for 18 straight minutes. We expected the legs to be the problem. They weren't.

Standing on bare concrete in full sun, the robot was already sitting at 115°F inside before it took a single step. Once it started walking, the hip and knee motors climbed fast — up to 149°F (65°C) — while the arms barely warmed up. No surprise there.

The surprise: when we paused the robot, the legs cooled off and the onboard computer (an NVIDIA Jetson Orin NX) didn't. It kept heating in a nearly straight line — about 1°F every minute — whether the robot was walking or standing dead still. Extrapolated out, it hits its throttle limit around the 33-minute mark and starts slowing itself down, the same way your phone does when it overheats in the sun.

Then we tested recovery: 18 minutes of doing nothing bought back about 3°F (1.7°C). When the surrounding air is 105°F, passive cooling barely works.

The takeaway for anyone running humanoids outdoors: in the heat, the limiting factor is the computer, not the motors — and it's completely invisible unless you measure it.

The Humanoid Shop is a humanoid robotics company in the Dallas–Fort Worth area and an official Booster Robotics channel partner. We sell, rent, and field-test humanoid robots in real-world conditions — so we can tell you what actually happens in the heat, not what a spec sheet claims.

New robot field tests regularly — subscribe if you want the failures nobody else films.
