Ask Uncle Gregory series: The Vision of IIA. Speaker - Gregory Gomez- President

The President of the Indigenous Institute of the Americas shares his original vision for the organization.

The Indigenous Institute of the Americas is currently the only organization in the North Texas Region that supports and encourages education, activities, and gatherings related to our many Nations from the South Pole to the North Pole. The "Ask Uncle Gregory" video and audio files evolved from our community activities and the experiences our volunteers reported while interacting with people from outside our cultures.

American Indian people have recognized for many years that Texas schools do not share accurate information about "Indian country" today nor a fundamental understanding of our vast knowledge base before colonization. Depictions of our culture being extinct, brutal, and primitive have led to misunderstandings that have a far-reaching impact.

In the 1980s, our founders, Gregory Gomez, Eddie Sandoval, and Cathy Gutierrez Gomez, envisioned an organization that encouraged meaningful interactions and dialogue between our people, our complicated cultures, and those outside our cultures.

The time is now to share our knowledge. We have become even more committed to this goal after losing so many elders through the impact of Covid 19. It is critical to preserving our "understandings" for future generations.

The "Ask Uncle Gregory" series is helpful to all ages but may be more understandable and appropriate for older high school youth and adults.
