On ‘Americans’ red carpet, Keri Russell, Matthew Rhys talk real-life relationship; Russia spy crisis

(17 Mar 2018) ON 'AMERICANS' RED CARPET, KERI RUSSELL, MATTHEW RHYS TALK REAL-LIFE RELATIONSHIP; RUSSIA SPY CRISIS
Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys play a married couple on a television show and are romantic partners in real life.
The couple walked the red carpet Friday night (16 MARCH 2018) in New York for the sixth and final season of their post-cold war thriller, "The Americans."
Russell and Rhys met while shooting the series, and now have a son together.
In the show, they play Soviet KGB officers that go deep undercover as an American family living outside of Washington DC.
"I think that the start of this story is really a relationship story, so I think that's what we always focus on and the extra stuff we just believe we're doing it, because that's where we're from. But I think it helps that it is a very relationship centered show," Russell said.
So how does their relationship at home affect what happens on set?
"Probably for the crew very badly," Russell smiled.
"Well on the days we argue, yeah," added Rhys. "They bring in knives so they can cut the tension. You know, it's - there are pros and cons and one will inform the other, on and off set, you know, there are days it lends itself perfectly, and then there are days when it does and it doesn't.".
When the show premiered in 2013, some critics felt its story about KGB operatives in early 1980s America seemed irrelevant. After all, the Cold War was over, and relations between the United States and Russia had thawed.
Now, the show is attracting attention for its uncanny prescience, in light of the United States' complicated relationship with Russia in the Trump era.
Rhys wants to thank the audience, as well as the critics, who stuck with the show from the beginning.
in the very beginning, we were fortunate with the audience that jumped on and went, 'this is strange,' because at that time, the press in Season One was saying, 'Is Russian interests in the U.S. relevant anymore?' So, to those who stuck with us from Season One, we thank you to those members of the press who said that, we thank you."
Now, relations between Moscow and the West are on the brink of diplomatic crisis.
Last week, a former Russian spy and his daughter were poisoned in the U.K. with a nerve agent known only to have been manufactured by Russia. That attack resembles an incident that happened on the show.
"We say things like that's so Season One," laughed Rhys.
"Now, we're asking who's copying who, you know, whether or not… Because we, we, umm - we took a story line from a KGB poisoning on the London Bridge for Season One, and now they are just copying us, which I find mundane."
Executive producer, Graham Yost said the Russians have always been masters of espionage.
"So, you asked about, you know, reflections of how things are today, and the one reality that you find out about the KGB then, and back for hundreds of years, is they're really, really good at this.  They know how to do spying pretty much better than anyone else in the world, and that's something we all have to always be thinking about."
As the show enters its final season and in events in the real world seems to resemble its plotlines, creator Joe Weisberg said it's just history repeating itself.
"We would like to pretend that we are geniuses who could tell the future, but the fact is a lot of this show is just based on research about the past. So, all the storylines that seem so prescient are really about things that happened during the Soviet period, and it's just it's just happening again. It's horrible and sad and hard to see, but it's just the past repeating itself," Weisberg said.
