It’s pretty easy to spot scam email when subject lines are misspelled and messages show up in our spam folders, but there are lots of clever scammers out there who have perfected the art of phishing email and have even added social media in the mix.
What are phishing scams?
These are attempts by an outside source — generally a person or enterprise of questionable moral character — to collect your personal information for their own financial gain. And they cast a wide, effective net — costing companies roughly half a billion dollars per year in the U.S. alone.
Being able to avoid the bait set every day by hackers and scam artists is an important skill to cultivate for all internet users. And if you’re running any aspect of your business online, getting caught will cost you.
Even with all of the antivirus technology in the world at your disposal, user error can still lead to company data getting compromised. All it takes is one wrong click inside an inbox.
Phony emails that trick users into divulging their personal information are prevalent all around the world, and they’re only on the rise as automation makes sending out bulk messages easier than ever.
If even you fell for a single one of these email phishing scams, it could mean big trouble for your business.
Not to mention, emails are one of the oldest internet scams out there. Phishers have had time to refine their skills over the years. Some now even specifically take aim at company executives (a process known as whaling) to nab high-level access to all kinds of company/employee data. As technology continues to improve, phishers are growing trickier.
Signs of phishing
-The email was sent from a public email domain, like @yahoo or @gmail.
-The domain name is misspelt
-Misleading links or attachments included in the message
-Grammar mistakes (phishers operate all around the world, but frequently target English-speaking users)
-The message creates a sense of urgency
Online phishing scams are born out of vulnerabilities. If one hacker finds a situation that can be exploited, they are going to do so. Phishing scams also prey on user’s anxiety of false emergencies — these con artists will use psychology, technology and craftiness to exploit anyone or any situation they can.
However, it’s not all doom and gloom for internet merchants.
If you invest in the digital security of your business, train yourself and others to be critical of suspicious emails, and maintain a proactive rather than reactive attitude about data protection, you’ll be able to (ideally) avoid a potential phishing crisis that ended up in your inbox.
The Journey is what everyday entrepreneurs, like you, need to follow in the pursuit of online success. Our experienced GoDaddy Guides are here to take you through all the steps, both big and small, that you encounter every day.
