Your gel or shellac pedicure can look beautiful.

But there is one reason I’m careful with it.

Gel and shellac polish create a tight protective coat over the nail. That seal can trap moisture under the nail surface.

Moisture is the perfect place for fungus to grow.

That means early signs of toenail fungus can sometimes hide under the polish.

Many people search things like:
• “Why is my toenail turning white?”
• “Why is my toenail thick after a pedicure?”
• “Is nail discoloration fungus?”
• “Can gel polish cause toenail fungus?”

Early signs of nail fungus may include:
• White spots on the nail
• Yellow or brown nail discoloration
• Thick toenails
• Crumbly nail edges
• A nail lifting slightly from the skin

Gel and shellac polish are not bad by themselves. But it’s important to check your natural nails regularly so you can catch problems early.

If your toenail color, thickness, or shape starts to change, it may be time to let the nail breathe and have it checked.

Healthy nails should be smooth, clear, and strong.

Follow your foot doctor for more real foot care tips and early warning signs your nails may be giving you.
