This footage captures an extremely rare encounter with a giant squid in its natural deep-sea habitat.

The animal was filmed around 750 meters below the surface in the Gulf of Mexico during a NOAA-funded expedition.

Researchers used a special deep-sea camera system called Medusa along with an electronic jellyfish lure designed to imitate glowing distress signals that attract predators.

The strategy worked — drawing one of the ocean’s most mysterious creatures directly into view.

Scientists estimated the squid in this encounter to be roughly 3–4 meters long.
