This video explains the true meaning behind the “Aura Monster Subaru staircase” moment in Re:Zero, including full context and events leading up to it. Spoiler warning for later parts of the season.

After being affected by memory loss following his arrival in another world, Natsuki Subaru is effectively reset to his Episode 1 state. During the events inside the Pleiades Watchtower, Subaru is repeatedly pushed down a massive spiral staircase, dying twice in the process, with the second death being especially brutal. Unable to identify the culprit, his fear and confusion grow as he escapes the tower and later ends up alone in the caves shown in Episode 3, where prolonged isolation and miasma begin to break his mental state.

When Subaru eventually returns to the tower, his perception has completely shifted. With no way to determine who attacked him, he concludes that anyone could be the enemy, and the only way to survive is to eliminate all possible threats. This is what leads to the infamous “Aura Monster Subaru staircase” illustration, where he is shown ascending the stairs with the intent to kill his own companions.

However, what Subaru encounters at the top of the staircase is far more disturbing than what he imagined, setting up an even darker revelation that will be explained in the next video.
