Risk Assessment and violence in the context of a psychotic episode - can violence be predicted?

This is a complex, unique film, looking at the contributory factors in a violent incident that occurs on an inpatient psychiatric unit. It starts with a very graphic and violent assault perpetrated by a patient upon one of the nurses on the unit. The film then works it's way backwards over a period of almost three weeks, giving the viewer the opportunity to think about whether or not there were any indications that the assault might have been coming and why it might have happened. Finally, there is a lengthy interview conducted by Grace, a senior nurse from another ward, as she tries to both understand why Donald assaulted George and the potential for another assault.

There are lots of questions for the viewer from all 3 parts of the film. Most importantly, what have you learned about the nature of such incidents and how they might be avoided. The assault and subsequent interview are based on actual events.

If you want to read more about the subject matter of this film, you can try "A Pocket Guide to Risk Assessment and Management in Mental Health", by Chris Hart and published by Routledge. It's available as an e-Book, on Amazon and in book shops.
