France in state of emergency after three killed in terror attack

France has raised its national security alert to its highest level after three people were killed in what the president has described as an “Islamist terror attack”.

Preparations were being made for morning Mass at the Notre Dame Basilica in Nice when police said a knife-wielding man entered the church and killed two women and a man.

A man was also shot dead near the southern city of Avignon after threatening police with a gun.

An attack was also carried out in Saudi Arabia on the French consulate in Jeddah, however, the suspect was arrested.

President Emmanuel Macron announced he will more than double the number of soldiers deployed to protect against future terror attacks.

France was preparing to enter stricter lockdown due to the coronavirus.
