ANTIGUA & BARBUDA: Carnival & Love - Part 1

This Travel by Dart webisode showcases Sorin discovering Antigua & Barbuda, the host of a fantastic carnival these days, after the dart he threw in Iceland sent him to the Caribbean.

In this video (part 1 of his adventure in this country), you’re introduced to the larger of the two islands, Antigua! After partnering with ABTA (Antigua & Barbuda Tourism Authority) Sorin explores the historical Nelson's Dockyard with guide Jason Francis and the majestic Shirley Heights with Kayla Christian from ABTA. Then he meets Keisha Schahaff. a lady who recently went to space after filling a contest from while being on random flight, and a former Miss Universe contestant, Shermain Jeremy.

Shermain is the spokesperson for Antigua & Barbuda Tourism Authority, where Sorin also meets the Minister of Tourism, Charles ‘Max’ Fernandez, who explains why people should visit Antigua & Barbuda: the famous carnival, the 365 beaches, the cuisine, the people, and more.

Last but not least, Sorin settles at one of the most most beautiful resorts on the island, Tamarind Hills.

The Antigua Carnival 2024 started on July 31st and will last August 7th. It is a 13-day festival celebrating emancipation from slavery on the island of Antigua. Highlights include colorful costumes, beauty pageants, talent shows, music, and the lively j'ouvert day with brass and steel band performances. Major events include the Party Monarch and Calypso Monarch competitions, Panorama steel band competition, Parade of Bands, Miss Antigua Pageant, and Caribbean Queen's Competition.

Smaller festivities include local concerts, food fairs, parades, and cultural shows. The carnival replaced the Old Time Christmas Festival in 1957 to boost tourism. The Antigua Carnival has deep historical roots dating back to the 18th century and the days of slavery. It has evolved over time, blending African, European and Caribbean influences. The festival brings people together to celebrate the island's vibrant culture, music, dance and heritage.
