Use of Geo-grid for Pavement Optimization on Highway Projects
With an increasing pressure to complete the highway projects within time and budget without compromising the performance, there exists a growing need for designers, consultants and contractors to employ innovative techniques for the design of highway pavements and other related structures. The use of geo-grids to optimize pavement design has become established technology, dating back more than thirty years. The key incentives to incorporate geo-grids in to pavement layers include savings in construction, maintenance and environmental costs, an increase in construction speed, and an enhancement in the performance of the pavement. This paper presents test results from various research programmers undertaken to demonstrate several benefits due to inclusion of stabilizing geo-grids into unbound pavement layers. Additionally, practical applications using project examples are presented.

Mr. Murtaza is a Chartered Engineer (CEng.) and fellow at Institute of Highway Engineers (FIHE) UK. He graduated from UET, Taxila with a BSc. in Civil Engineering, also from Manchester Business School with an MBA in Construction. With more than 16 years of total experience, including 5 years in Middle East (Oman, UAE), 8 years in the United Kingdom and nearly 1 year in Malaysia, he has worked on various prestigious infrastructure projects requiring reinforced soil structures, ground stabilization, pavement optimization and asphalt reinforcement solutions using geo-synthetics in constructions in different parts of the world including United Kingdom, Middle East, Africa and Asia Pacific. He also had the privilege to attend and present at various international seminars and conferences held in several countries.
