From Tusks to Tech: African Wildlife Vets Equip Elephants with GPS Collars

Wildlife vets use helicopters and ground teams to fit GPS collars on African elephants.

These crews dart the elephants from the air with tranquilizers, before ground teams move in to collar and adjust the devices and administer the tranquilizer antidote. These tracking tools inform scientific research by providing essential data on migration patterns, social behavior and habitat utilization. These insights aid in the development of evidence-based conservation strategies, ultimately contributing to the long-term management of elephant populations and coexistence between these animals and human communities.

As a wildlife veterinarian in South Africa, William Fowlds encounters a diverse range of animal species, including elephants, lions, cheetahs, and giraffes, providing medical care, performing surgeries and rescues, and working tirelessly to protect and conserve these iconic creatures and their habitats.
