My favorite hike on Vancouver Island

5040 Peak via Cobalt Lake Trail

This and the Triple Peak trail are two of the most iconic and beautiful views on Vancouver Island, so if you’re visiting make sure you don’t miss them!

The actual hike from the trailhead up to 5040 peak will be around 4.5-6 miles depending on how far along the other Ridgeline you want to walk (if at all), BUT the kicker is there’s 3000ft of elevation gain! Meaning you’re climbing 3000ft over the course of like 2 miles…. So its more of a climb than a hike

But the views are absolutely incredible and so worth it!

Its also pretty Rooty and rocky on the way up too so just keep that in mind

The biggest thing you NEED TO KNOW for this hike is that you NEED 4x4 to reach the trailhead!

Any old regular car is not gonna cut it

There’s a few really sketchy parts with big potholes and loose gravel and rocks on a steep incline your normal car won’t do

A Subaru Crosstrek is the absolute bare minimum I would trust on this forest road, and even that may not make it if you don’t have off-road driving experience #insuburuwetrust

Luckily there is a small spot to pull off to the side of the road before it gets really bad (about 6km up the forest road), so you can park there if you need to and then walk the additional 6km on the road up to the trailhead, or make a friend and hitchhike the rest of the way

Don’t worry, hikers are usually friendly

Make sure you bring water and enough snacks for a beautiful lunch at the top!
