Equity Book Talk Series: Dr. Toby Jenkins - The Hip Hop Mindset

Dr. Toby Jenkins, author of 'The Hip Hop Mindset: Success Strategies for Educators and Other Professionals' joined the USC Race and Equity Center for their third session of Equity Book Talk Series on June 3, 2024.

As professor associate dean of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the Graduate School at the University of South Carolina, Dr. Toby Jenkins studies the use of culture as a politic of social survival, a tool of social chance, and a transformational space in educational settings.

In The Hip-Hop Mindset: Success Strategies for Educators and Other Professionals, Dr. Jenkins moves beyond teaching strategies to explore how hip-hop mindsets can inform how educators can innovate and trail-blaze new ways of knowing, being, doing, and leading.

USC Race and Equity Center’s Equity Book Talk Series invites nationally renowned scholars, experts, and authors to discuss their books with host and moderator, Dr. John Pascarella. For more than a decade, the Center has aimed to dismantle racism, white supremacy, and anti-blackness in all their forms. For the last four years, educators have faced greater public scrutiny, book bans, and pervasive censorship of their curriculum choices and classroom discussions than the previous four decades. This series is offered to educators and individuals across the country seeking to advance racial equity in their schools, colleges, companies, and organizations, despite widespread censorship efforts.
