Taliban effectively takes control of Afghanistan 20 years on from 9/11

In the months after the 9/11 terror attack the Taliban was removed from power by western backed forces but 20 years later they are effectively back in control.

United States President Joe Biden, who is currently on holiday, released a statement saying he would not hand over the war to a fifth president and he does not regret the decision to withdraw.

America is now rushing to complete a full withdrawal of its embassy staff in Kabul within 72 hours.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has blamed the Afghan military for being unable to defend the country.

“As a strategic matter, there is nothing that our strategic competitors would like more than to see us bogged down and mired in Afghanistan for another five, 10, 20 years,” Mr Blinken said.
